Video transcript:

How do you keep being passionate about what you’re building?

I think that’s a great question. I started co-founding Endeavor 20 years ago and today we operate in 30 countries in 60 cities around the world. I would say that number one my job has changed. I’ve been CEO the entire time, but my job has evolved. I used to be starting up all new countries and realize that’s impossible because I have daughters who are 12. I was not going to run around the world. I had to build a team for that.

About 10 years ago I brought in our top performing managing director to become president of Endeavor so he could manage a lot of the day-to-day operations and I could be elevated. We started a co-investment fund which was new. I think that every two or three years, I not only go through a new strategic plan and a new vision for Endeavor, but give a hard look at what is my role, should it change, can anyone be doing this job better than I can, and the refresh.

A few years ago I ended up writing this book ‘Crazy is a compliment’, partly because I felt like I needed to re-organize my own intellectual property and see am I still excited. I found out I was but I didn’t know going in there. In fact, I was very proud of myself, every 2 to 3 years I think about am I the right CEO, is this the right job?

Reid Hoffman who is a former visionary, a board member, and dear friend of mine, I was interviewing him about a month ago and he said CEOs should ask themselves or founders every 3 to 6 month if they are the right person. I think that’s really important because if you’re not changing, if you’re not growing, if you’re not evolving, then you’re probably also not adding that much new blood or new ideas into your company.
