What are the biggest mistakes in hiring and firing people?

I think the biggest hiring mistake I’ve ever made was hiring my friends because it’s so hard to work with a friend who you have to criticize and yell at and if it doesn’t work out and then it might damage or ruin the relationship. I’ve done this several times before and now I try not to hire friends.

So that’s I think the biggest one. Other mistakes I made is not being honest if someone isn’t the right fit for the company. I wish that I just told someone to move on and say, “hey, this doesn’t look like a great fit”. You know it, I know it, let’s come up with a good way to move on. I was not honest about that early on because I was scared. Those were the two biggest early mistakes I made.
