What is the first step when expanding internationally?

International expansion is a lot of fun but it’s incredibly complex. So when you start thinking about “how am I going to take my company from the US to Europe or from Europe to the US” or “how do I expand into APJ, Asia, Pacific, and Japan”. What I found is that the best way to do that is through working with a team that has done big chunks of it before. Because of that way, for example, you know what to expect when you start dealing with the customer and you have to have a legal contract to run with to sign up a German customers and you have to deal with German taxes and German payrolls. I’ve benefit greatly, I could not have done what we did with Elastic if it wasn’t for, for example, our CFO who has buildup and scaled out international organizations quite a few times before. Because that way, you can move much faster and you don’t make the mistakes that one would for sure make if you haven’t done it before. So, you find a team that knows what to do.
